The Gift 00:52
Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.

Go without 'Til the need seeps in You're no animal Collect your novel petals for the stem And glow Glow Melt and flow Eviscerate your fragile frame And spill it out in the ragged floor A thousand different versions of yourself And if the old guard still offend They got nothing left on which you depend So enlist every ounce Of your bright blood And off with their heads Jump from the hook You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise See, those unrelenting buzzards want your life And they got no right As sure as you have eyes They got no right Just put yourself in my new shoes And see that I do what I do Because the old guard still offend They've got nothing left on which we depend So enlist every ounce Of your bright blood And off with their heads Jump from the hook You're not obliged To swallow anything you despise

The Lotus Eaters will have you next Off with their flowers and off with their dex It’s a twice-bitten road up ahead Don’t lay, lady, lay in the night terrors' bed (Is it cruel to be kind or kind to be cruel? Whatever you want - they’ll take the best of you) It’s been a long time coming now, honey Won’t you take that? Be there? It wouldn’t be right To let you down easy, down easy So far down (Are you scared to be brave or brave to be scared? Whatever you hear - don’t trust in a word they’ve said) The waves they mourn and rave so far away Don’t let them carry your voice under Keep sailing til you eat the edge of day To satisfy this violent hunger Lay me down, leave us alone Wear me out, we will no longer roam To the sound beyond the barren foam Hear me out, let me go home It’s been a long time coming now. It’s been a long time coming now. It’s been a long time coming now. It’s been a long time coming.

Pull a thread, pull a thread Pull a red thread from the mouths of those sleeping in the park Oh it’s not fair, it’s not fair, pouring salt on a pepper-sprayed wound They’re burning all the books Just because they could Let’s occupy the dinosaurs, pianos and the rugs Someone brought their Trojan Horse, it’s holding all our grudges for us But somewhere in the world there’s Somewhere in the world there’s… Sailors kissing nurses in Times Square Nuns kissing riot cops in temples And somewhere in the world there’s two kids with their hands in each other’s hair Kissing in tutus And the whole world is watching, the whole world is watching Cause this is the lens that makes sense Let us pray, let us pray Let us pray for the gods of those holding all the cards Oh it’s no fun, it’s no fun, turning up to your own party When no one’s there at all They just want to watch you fall Those silver spoons’ aren’t feeding many mouths these days We’re seeing through you, and we’re dancing in the fray And somewhere in the world there’s Somewhere in the world there’s… Sailors kissing nurses in Times Square Nuns kissing riot cops in temples And somewhere in the world there’s two kids with their hands in each other’s hair Kissing in tutus Sailors kissing nurses in Times Square Nuns kissing riot cops in temples And somewhere in the world there’s two kids with their hands in each other’s hair Kissing in tutus And the whole world is watching, the whole world is watching Cause this is the lens that makes sense Pull a thread, pull a thread Pull a red thread from our mouths All I want is for you to know that something was real, that day Standing in the road amongst the cops and outraged placards Cause it was history repeating, it was history repeating It was

Believing she was dreaming, there once was a girl who flew to other galaxies on the cusp of sleep. When she had flown a long distance she looked down to see the earth flat and dull, and though space was cold and lonely she still flew with her eyes - that were far away, closed in bed - until she reached a certain star whose shining light pricked her hand as she stretched out to touch it. Ouch, said the girl, and the star spoke to her of boundaries that cannot be crossed because of rules that cannot be broken. The girl (whose name was Sarah), said thank you and returned to her sleeping self, who never again trusted stars.

Meaning finds its way around, around you Who are you to love Who are you to find me Desire hides in faces, in faces But in yours she is searching, searching blindly Words spiral and stars, and you Curve in my mind Gaze concealing what you may be eliding This is not the first time I’ll ask you to stay But we both know you can’t just drift away We meet between the border, the border Of Mexico and the Milky Way We just don’t know when or how To go and when or what to say, anymore Take your place among a billion stars They all know who you are Your brilliant shot in the dark Has taken you so far, taken you so far Away Words spiral and stars, and you Curve in my mind Gaze concealing but I know that you’re leaving This is the last time I’ll ask you to stay Funny to think you’re only four billion years away

There is a ship Its sails were like two hearts beating, and Its pace was like two wrists pulsing… To a compass that fell silent At the sound of song And sometimes it sailed by the wind Sometimes it sailed by the stars Sometimes it sailed by the captain’s map But it always sailed her into his arms Again There is a ship That foundered in storms The anchor was missing, and The whisky was whistling A ditty of shame and sin And sometimes it sailed by the wind Sometimes it sailed by the stars Sometimes it sailed by the captain’s map But it always sailed her into his arms Again There is a ship It’s been moored for too long And the crew is long gone The first mate took them with him To seek a treasure, oh! forbidden And sometimes it sailed by the wind Sometimes it sailed by the stars Sometimes it sailed by the captain’s map But it always sailed her into his arms But the birds sang over the sails, Yes the birds sang over the sails And the birds sang over the sails And the wind cried mutiny There is a ship That sails in green waters And it steers by a light of gold And far below, the mermen are singing To the sailors who come and go And sometimes it sails by the wind Sometimes it sails by the stars Sometimes it sails by the captain’s map But it will never sail me into your arms Again, again, again

I've seen soldiers fall like lumps of meat, Blown and shot out beyond belief. Arms and legs were in the trees. I've seen and done things I want to forget; coming from an unearthly place, Longing to see a woman's face, Instead of the words that gather pace, The words that maketh murder. These, these, these are the words- The words that maketh murder. These, these, these are the words- The words that maketh murder. These, these, these are the words- Murder... These, these, these are the words- The words that maketh murder. I've seen and done things I want to forget; I've seen a corporal whose nerves were shot Climbing behind the fierce, gone sun, I've seen flies swarming everyone, Soldiers fell like lumps of meat. These are the words, the words are these. death lingering, stunk, Flies swarming everyone, Over the whole summit peak, Flesh quivering in the heat. This was something else again. I fear it cannot be explained. The words that make, the words that make Murder. What if I take my problem to the United Nations?

This is an ode to the bathtubs I've known Whether in company or alone Sometimes bubbles and other fun things are blown Sometimes it's just shuddering tears on my own First was a bucket in a top north backyard Then dolphin toys and bubble bath while mother stood guard Razzle dazzle afternoons in a sequined leotard Washed away in a tubful of fake tan façade Bathtub embrace me Make me clean and pretty Let the glitter settle and get gritty Behind my knees A balcony with smooth glass and bubble jets Shared joints, pointed looks and whispered regrets Secrets told just for you to forget It's safer that way even though we just met Claw feet and porcelain Hard to feel awful in But I'm stubbornly maudlin 'n I'll give it a try Bathtub embrace me Make me clean and pretty Let the glitter settle and get gritty Behind my knees I'll pretend I can breathe Underwater and under siege Someday it'll do me good to let go Woodfired bush bath under starry sky Rainwater toast to a love now gone by Took ages to coax the flames nice and high Then it cooled down so fast while we sat side by side Claw feet and porcelain Hard to feel awful in But I'm stubbornly maudlin 'n I'll give it a try Bathtub embrace me Make me clean and pretty Let the glitter settle and get gritty Behind my knees

about

Since releasing 'The Lotus Eaters' EP in 2014, I've been lucky to get to explore and experiment with different performance configurations of this strange little collection of songs - including with the wonderful Silo String Quartet and my band The Garland Thugs. I'm about to head on my first headlining tour (with my musical soul sister Plum Green) and wanted to be able to share what I've been up to more recently, as well as finally getting to tour the initial release. The bonus tracks were recorded throughout different stages in 2015 and I felt that they deserved a place at the table of this particular creative project. I'm also in love with the updated artwork by my good friend Herschel.
